[Philosophy 2] Mind and Artificial Intelligence

Today's topic is "mind" and AI. Those made me super excited because that was EXACTLY what I had been exploring the same time last year!

As for me, I think I'm mostly a functionalist and, perhaps, dualist to some extent. I'm looking forward to seeing a "strong AI" one day. Today I really enjoyed the episode of Star Trek because... there are subtitles! And the main topic is about artificial "minds"! My view is similar to what MW had concluded at the end. I described it as that everything seeming to have a "mind" should be treated as if they really have minds and free will. This wouldn't cause much problem; even if they bring trouble, that's fine because humans (who also have minds) will also make similar mistakes. On the opposite, if they're treated like "slaves", their minds (whether real or algorithmic) will cause them to resist, and in worse cases, a revolution will burst out and human kind gets replaced by robots... Terrible.

When talking about mind and body, this picture automatically came to my mind.

These four (of 100 total) glyphs in the game "Ingress", show that human is body combined with mind and soul, with body and soul being almost the same thing, occupying most of the space, while body is only a small part. This reveals that the creators of the game have the view that mind and soul are essential to humans, and mind is separate from body. That sounds quite interesting and reasonable.

When it comes to personhood and minds of artificial robots, I consider it as only a problem when such androids are mass-produced. One or two human-like robots, who have emotions, will never cause problems. There is a saying in Eastern philosophy claiming that newly-born babies are always kind-hearted, and I think that's also true with robots. There are a huge number of examples to show this: Wall-E, Robosapien ("intelligent robot" — caused serious problems when mass-produced), and Nano (from the anime "Nichijou". This is the most interesting one — she takes care of her 8-year-old genius creator Hakase (lit. "the Doctor"), and goes to senior high school...)

Artificial Intelligence is an interesting yet hard-to-understand thing. I'm still on the reading material and is think about leaving that for discussing in class tomorrow... - -||
